Sorry, this is starting to get really long.
I have a 14 year old cat. She's had some health problems in the past few years. She was on insulin for about 8 months but once she lost weight she stopped needing it. Everything was fine until a couple weeks ago.
She's always been a voracious eater, and with the diabetes she's on wet food. One day she got some food in her ear and developed an ear infection. We took her to the vet and she was on an ear flush but they also gave her oral clavamox for two weeks. She has a sensitive stomach and I had this weird feeling like that was too much for an ear infection, especially with another direct antiseptic, but I did what the vet said. On day 12 she started losing her appetite. This is really concerning for a natural pig, like my girl. We had to keep going with the antibiotics, so we hand fed her really carefully to make sure she got it.
On day 13 she threw up. A couple hours later she had a huge mess of diarrhea. That was 2 days ago and she hasn't eaten since. We went back to the vet, they gave us more medications (A probiotic, stool softener, and ANOTHER freaking antibiotic.) $400 bill. We're not doing well financially, but you've gotta do what you've gotta do. She won't keep anything down. Not ingesting any of the medications. No food. Not the stinkiest, fishiest pate. Not even fresh scrambled eggs. Nothing. 12 more hours and permanent liver damage will likely set in.
I know that if I had just stopped with the antibiotics after 10 or 11 days we wouldn't be here. All of this from an overly-aggressively treated ear infection. An ear infection...and she's dying. I don't know how I'm going to live with myself.
