My son’s 3yr old cat isn’t the friendliest one in the world and doesn’t do well with other cats. We have a neighborhood stray that sometimes hangs out on our patio, and every time our cat sees him he practically rams his head into the glass door because he wants to get out and attack him.
Last year we brought my previously re-homed 15yr old cat back to live with us again, and the mean cat tormented him incessantly, until 15yo cat died of natural causes a month later. I think I’ll always feel resentful towards him for making that period of time so crappy and hard on him.
Now a year after losing my sweet guy, I feel like I am finally emotionally ready to get a cat of my own. But how am I supposed to do that when I expect my cat to attack the new one? I feel like I can’t do the trial run thing, and just see how it goes at first then give the cat back if mine doesn’t tolerate it...that could be devastating. But the thought of bringing a sweet new cat into an unfamiliar environment, only to have it scared and attacked by a bully, breaks my heart.
So do I just have to accept that for the next decade I can’t have a cat?
Also I’ve heard mixed answers on whether you should have a male-female or male-male pairing. Any insight on that would be great too!
