Pet bird advice

So I have been wanting a pet bird for a long time. I went to a zoo awhile back and that had an area where hundreds of birds fly around and land on you and eat out of your hand and I fell in love with them even more and shifted from just liking them, to really wanting one. I have searched around for info, but advice for beginners is jumbled and inconsistent.

Here’s the situation.

  • My wife is afraid of birds. While I would love having one that can be out of the cage a lot, that is probably not realistic. But I do want one that is ok with hands on time because I absolutely want to interact with it. Something less prone to biting I guess.

  • I know birds chirp, but more quiet breeds are better.

  • I’m not looking for a 100 year life span bird. Not looking to have to put a pet into my will haha

-Smaller is better. Closer to parakeet than parrot I guess.

I know these seem like strict guidelines but I am experienced with many pets and animals and know how important it is to get the right pet and breed/species.

Thanks for any help or advice you all can give.
