A little over a month ago, my cat (female, 9 years old) had to get her anal glands surgically repaired. One of them abscessed and ruptured and the other one was impacted. We were told come back 5 weeks later to check up on her anal glands.
We brought her in today, and they were found to be clogged again. She hadn’t shown any symptoms and it doesn’t seem that they were infected, just clogged with a thick substance. The vet expressed them and said to come back 5 weeks from now to see if it recurs. Meanwhile, we are getting a fecal test and blood work done.
My family and I are so lost. Everything I’ve read about this issue says it’s really rare for cats to have this, and it’s even rarer for it to recur. Even the vet is surprised. When it recurs, it’s often because the cat is obese. My cat is actually petite—she’s only 6 lbs (always been small).
Could soft stools really be the cause? When we brought her in last month, the vet noticed that she had diarrhea. After her surgery, she had diarrhea and soft stools for two weeks, probably caused by the antibiotics. Could this have led to the second impaction?
It just so happened that one of my other cats scratched her really bad a few days ago. She got the wound checked out (it’s so deep it has to be sutured), and another round of antibiotics. I’m worried this will cause another long-term bout of diarrhea and more anal gland troubles, if that’s even the cause.
What do you guys think? Have you ever had this problem? Did it get resolved? What foods should I give her? Vet recommended fish oil.
I’m so sad and tired because these problems came out of nowhere. She has always been healthy and fit. She had and has a big appetite. I don’t know what’s going on.
