Should I seek legal pet custody?

Dog custody

I need help and advice from fellow fur baby parents!!

My ex and I broke up a year ago, long story short. We shared two furbabies together but when the relationship dissolved - we couldn’t come to a compromise on who will take who. Instead it became this battle on who is more ‘fit’ to be the main caregiver.

At the same time, my visa expired - I ran out of time. Had to leave the country in hurry and moved backed to Asia. Did not have enough time to even arrange for pet transport.

Fast forward to 2020, covid-19 hit and with travel restrictions. I haven’t had the chance to fly back and visit my fur baby. She currently still lives with my ex. We are not on speaking terms, and I have no idea what to do. It seems kind of pathetic to see updates on my fur baby based on social media.

I had a thought of going through the legal route but did not want things to turn ugly between myself and her folks (it’s a respect thing) trying to be the ‘bigger’ person here but I just can’t seem to let go and simply give up my dog to someone else. I spent the past 5 years raising her from a puppy to adulthood.

It is clear to everyone whoever associated during our relationship that we each have our own companion which we are closer to. My fur baby was clearly mine and her fur baby was clearly hers.
