So, we very recently adopted a kitten, about 5-6 weeks old, and have started introducing her to our dogs. Started with our oldest, an 11 year old golden retriever. However, since then she, the dog, with the exception of what might have been a gentle attempt at biting when they first met, has been absolutely fixated on the kitten; she follows her around, stares at her, and does a lot of pushing and a little bit of licking.
She'll look away from the kitten if we call her, and will walk away from it as well, but always gets back to staring at her.
At first I was afraid that her prey drive was kicking in and she was going to attack the cat, but now I have no idea whats going through her head. I can't tell if she's mothering the kitten or stalking it.
This is the first time we've had a cat in the house, so it is possible that she just doesn't know what it is, but I'd rather not leave the possibility of the kitten getting hurt to chance.
Any thoughts?
Edit: I should add that we have a kennel for the kitten, and when she was locked away for the night, our dog laid outside the kennel, stared in at the kitten, and whined. After we moved the dog to a different room, she was fine.
