What pet would be good for me?

Hello everyone,

I've recently graduated from Uni and living with my partner and I was thinking about getting a pet. Nothing big like dog or a cat, but rather a hamster, guinea pig, chinchilla, Etc. I've grown up with pets (9 birds and a dog), and I really want to learn how to take care of something myself.

The pet will spend most of it's time in my room. I understand that hamsters, guinea pigs, and other animals need a lot more room than people typically expect and I'm willing to create a space where they have adequate room (maybe a space in my bedroom and our small living room?).

I would like a pet that will not stink up our basement apartment, or who's scent is easily manageable.

I'm also in my early 20s and I plan on moving and travelling in my life (not excessively), so I'm leaning towards a hamster because it's less of a long-term commitment or an older animal of another breed. I have also found a pet sitter near my home for when I do leave for travel/family business.

I don't travel often (maybe twice a year for two weeks).

My ultimate goal with this pet would be to give it a good life. I've always felt anxious around my past pets because I've felt that I was not capable of loving them enough or giving them what they needed. This feeling is often informed by my fear of losing things that I love. As I've gotten older, I've realized I have the capacity to care and love and I need to put in the work and trust myself.
