I am moving into with my mom and she has our older 8-9 year old Boston Terrier, and I am coming with my 8 year old cat.
We are looking to move into a brand new space all of us. It will be a new environment for both animals.
I have introduced my cat to one other animal before- another cat- who I unfortunately lost this year. It was a journey but eventually after a lot of separation and careful controlled introductions they became tolerant and would sometimes cuddle up.
I’m not expecting the same behaviour between my cat and dog. Just to be able to have a calm house for all parties.
The dog isn’t animal aggressive but he is anxious. He had a very traumatizing experience with an unleashed dog who grabbed him by the neck. This was years ago but obviously effected him deeply.
The dog has seen cats before through glass doors and was very curious and interested. Non aggressive just very rambunctious and excited by them.
Mom is very aware and respectable over the fact that they will be introduced slowly and controlled environments.
Tomorrow I am going to bring one of my cats many blankets to her house so the dog can spend a few days with her scent, and bring it home to do the same with the cat. Will continue scent sealing between houses until we find a suitable place to move to.
Besides scent swapping, keeping them separated, and introducing them over a longish period of time is there any other things I can do to help them?
Both are very calm relaxed animals. Both extremely lazy and enjoy to sleep most of the day. Cat will come see me for a few minutes than go back to bed. Dog will sleep majority of the day and sometimes partake at barking at strangers from the living room window.
The process won’t be rushed. I just want to make sure both of my animals are comfortable in what will be their new home together and cohabiting. I want to do everything right by them.
