Balding Dog Ears?

First time posting, thanks for the help :)

I have a 10(ish) year old mini dachshund, and he’s started going bald! He’s kind of a weird looking fella and has always had some bald patches, and has always had completely bald belly.

Recently his ears have been going bald at a somewhat alarming rate. They have been balding for a while, but it’s gotten much worse over the last few weeks. He scratches them sometimes, but not compulsively, and will stop if distracted.

I have been putting neosporin on his ears (I read it’s safe for dogs) because the skin seems dry and flaky.

Otherwise he has no behavioral changes, and no bumps, scabs or redness- just bare skin!

I have read that “generic balding” is common in older dachshunds, and he’s showing no other symptoms of parasites or infection.

Does anyone have any experience with balding dogs? We recently dropped $1400 at the vet (and was incorrectly told he had cancer!) due to an X-ray error- so I’m not too keen to take him back if this is harmless, but absolutely will if this balding could be something serious!

Thank you :)
