I don't connect with my cat very well

I'm 17, and I had a cat for under a year. We got him at 8 months and he was big and rowdy, but he was the sweetest cat. When I'd get home from school, I would sit on my bed and he would put both front paws on my shoulder and bury his nose into my neck, like our daily hug. He would also do this without fail whenever I would cry or seem sad. Sometimes he would do it for a few seconds, stop, then I would whimper a little bit at him, and the poor little soldier would come back and 'hug' me again. He was very personable and affectionate with me.

At some point my mom basically got tired of him and gave back to the shelter. Months later (1 year ago) she brought home a 5 week old kitten. Very cute cat, always been relaxed and mild mannered. But I never felt I had much connection with her. Even now, she doesn't seem to actually enjoy me or anyone else. She'll come for pets now and then because I guess head scritches feel nice.

She just isn't the most personable cat. I'm not expecting her to be a dog and jump up and down to greet me, but she seems to have little to no affection for me, her main owner. She's also a little bit pissy sometimes. She'll go out into the hallway and I will simply stand behind her for her to get back into the apartment. And she'll hiss at me. Yes she's been spayed.

This is probably a silly post but will I be able to connect with her more as she gets older? She's been particularly aloof even as a little kitten.
