need advice for a weird situation

Hi all,

So I volunteer as a foster for my local humane society. I recently fostered a cat for a few months and formed a strong bond with it, so much that I decided I wanted to adopt her. When I returned her to the rescue, I told them that I wanted to adopt her. They said awesome, you’re approved and you can come pick her back up after we schedule her spay surgery. They told me I would get a call on Tuesday, I didn’t hear from them and then they were closed for the holidays so I called on Saturday and was told she hadn’t been scheduled yet but would for sure call me when they do.

On Tuesday I get a call saying she’s been scheduled and I can come grab her. I stop by to get her, sign the adoption contract, pay the fee… and then they bring me out a totally different cat. It turns out on Saturday she had been adopted out to someone else. Apparently someone mixed up the name and photo tags on the cages and gave my cat away.

I’m fucking devastated. I cried my eyes out and asked them to please call the adopter and explained what happened. They basically refused, saying they can’t do that, the cat wasn’t actually mine, I can adopt any other cat there for free. I feel like they’re 100% in the wrong, I know mistakes happen but I feel like they just do not care. I know some people will say that the cat wasn’t really mine, but no, she absolutely was in my eyes - we bonded and I was waiting to bring her back home.

I just don’t know what to do, if there’s even anything I can do. I guess I’m just looking for advice on what to do or how to deal with this, I’m just really heartbroken over this.
