Hey all,
TLDR; How can I entice my new buddy to self play with toys when he doesn't respond to catnip nor have interest in self playing?
Background:
A month or so back, I adopted a cat from the local animal rescue program. My little buddy is around 8 months old now and has been adjusting great to my place. He's really started to be comfortable around the house, even when our robot vacuum is running. He is currently on an auto feeder in the morning (not getting up early on the weekends) and I give him lunch/dinner. Each meal is normally associated with a play session with an interactive toy, either ground or air, and normally another play session around 10 pm before bedtime bed.
Problem:
Sometimes I want to just chill but my kitty wants to keep playing (I've had 2 hour play sessions between the boil/simmer play method). I want to get him to be able to self play, but whenever I play with a toy then let him play with it by himself, he loses interest in it. I've tried putting down catnip before a one of those style of play sessions along with soaking the toy in a bag of catnip, my cat will lick it for a bit, maybe eat some, then seems to lose interest. I've read catnip may not work for all cats and there are other alternatives that could work (space kitty express's mixes). I've ordered those, but I'm worried he wont respond well to them. I'm wondering how I can get my cat to self play? From what I've read, you should be able to incentivize play with food/treats/affection, but if he doesn't play with the toy at all, how can I incentivize?
