My dog is very high energy and fetch is his absolute favorite game. He has become a little neurotic about fetch so recently we have stopped bringing toys to the park to encourage him to play with other dogs instead.
He has resorted to finding sticks for us to throw and yesterday I gave in and started throwing sticks to tire him out. As we were about to leave, I threw one last stick. As it hit the ground, it must have stuck in the dirt with the end of the stick pointing up toward my dog as he went to grab it.
It ended up puncturing the back of his throat in two places (it must have been forked at the end). We rushed him to the emergency vet where they ended up having to do emergency surgery.
He is back home and stable right now but there is a chance that there could be damage to his esophagus or infection so we need to closely monitor him for the next week.
The vet said this is a fairly common injury but this is one of the worst cases they had seen and he came very close to a potentially fatal injury. Please be careful and don't play with sticks with your dogs!
TLDR: dog received major puncture injury in his throat from playing with sticks.
