PTSD in cats, triggered by paw touching. Any tips for prepping fractious cat for getting trimmed?

I recently adopted a cat, earlier this month. He’s sweet and doesn’t cause any trouble around the house.

I think he has PTSD around his paws. He’s fine with a little petting and brushing, but if I touch his paws at all, he instantly gets in a bad mood and starts biting. If you try to hold him on his back (it’s easy to clip some cats claws that way) or use any claw-trimming restraints and he becomes extremely violent. A couple times, I was able to clip one nail while he was sleeping (without touching the paw), but he woke up each time and left, very irritated.

The vet prescribed gabapentin to give him before getting trimmed — in part for their safety! Somehow they managed to do it the other day. I want to see if there’s anything I can do at home. I’ve read some articles say like “start by lighting holding the paw and work up to retracting one claw at a time” but no even that is too much for him. The most I can do is lightly touch the top of one while he’s sleeping, tho even that’ll wake him up and he’ll be on guard.
