What are the dangers of letting my indoor cats out on the patio (supervised)?

I am thinking about letting my two indoor-only cats (9 months old) go out onto my patio to get some fresh air and enrichment (supervised only). I was wondering if anyone has advice or experiences about potential dangers to prevent.

  • I would be out there with them - I would NOT let them ever be outside unsupervised.
  • The patio is fenced (6 ft tall wood, and I would definitely add some kind of fence topper like this one since one of my cats loves climbing/jumping). Anyone have experience with these?
  • There's no other way to escape except maybe under the gate, but I would nail a board there to make sure there is not enough space for them to crawl under.
  • The neighbor's cat sometimes jumps my fence and comes into the patio, but I think the topper would keep her out. I have not seen any other animals in my patio. So I don't think my cats would need any extra vaccinations besides the standard ones like rabies, etc.?
  • I have some plants, but I would supervise my cats to make sure they don't eat anything besides grass. I don't use pesticides.
  • My cats are on heartworm prevention (since mosquitos sometimes sneak into the house) but nothing for fleas/parasites since they are indoor-only. I would consider something like Revolution but I would rather not put that on their skin if I can avoid it...any other products or solutions you would recommend?
  • They are both microchipped, but don't wear collars.

I'm a very nervous cat parent (lol) so I really want to make sure I am aware of any risks before letting them get a little taste of the outdoors. I won't do it unless I feel like it would be super safe. I'd love any ideas or advice or warnings you have. Thank you!
