Why do I feel like taking care of a cat is mentally exhausting?

I recently adopted a cat and it seems like that's all that's consuming me right now. I think about her 24/7, I play with her everyday when I get off work for a little bit, I let her follow me around the house, love on her like no other.

I feel mixed emotions.

She is my first pet ever (as an adult). I grew up with cats, dogs, and farm animals, and it never felt like this, but now that I'm grown, out of the house, etc, this feels mentally exhausting. I plan on eventually getting her a friend (very sociable cat), but for now it's just me and her.

Is it sounding like me just missing my freedom to do whatever I want or just me adjusting to having someone else constantly there in my life?

Anyone else experience anything similar to what I'm feeling?

Ugh
