Cat becomes extremely aggressive at the vet – looking for advice

TLDR: I’ve taken my cat to four different vets and he is too aggressive for them to get anything done. They haven’t been able to do a check-up or vaccinations in years. Sedation via Gabapentin did not work. Vets just give up and tell me to take him home. Need advice!

My nine year old cat was fine with routine check ups and vaccinations up until about two years ago. He suddenly flipped out on the vet mid-appointment and became so aggressive that they gave up on attempting a blood draw and sent him home.

Since then, we have not had a single successful vet appointment. I have taken him to FOUR different vets, explained the situation each time, and they all smugly assured me that they deal with aggressive cats every day and he’ll be fine. They were all wrong. My cat is 18 pounds (Maine Coon mix) and a total sweetheart at home but turns into an absolute demon at the vet.

They literally cannot get him out of his carrier. Of all four vets I’ve brought him to, only one of them was able to get him out of the carrier and then was not able to touch him after that. He growls, screams, and tries to attack them violently if they even approach him. The vets usually end up bringing 2-3 extra people in the room for assistance, and they even put those long oven mitt things on their arms for protection, they try to wrap him in a towel, but simply can’t hold him down. It always ends with the vets bleeding and frustrated, and I feel horrible about it.

My most recent vet prescribed him the maximum dose of Gabapentin (a sedative) and asked me to sedate him and try again later that week. I followed the instructions and sedated him properly, and he was super sleepy and chill at home but the moment we got to the vet all hell broke loose. Once again they couldn’t even get as far as removing him from the carrier.

So, now, I simply don’t know what to do. Every vet I’ve taken him to has given up. They can’t even pet him or take his temperature, much less do vaccinations. But he really needs a check-up, shots, and blood work done.

What really bothers me is how every new vet I take him to doesn’t take me seriously when I say he’s extremely aggressive, then they struggle with him for 20 minutes (which only deepens his trauma and hatred of the vet) before giving up and telling me they can’t do anything.

Does anyone have experience with this or advice?
