Today I learned that one of my parent’s cats has some large kidney stones. They learned earlier this week when he started peeing blood. He has been at the vet on a catheter and on fluids for the past few days with no good results. They have made the call that when we remove the catheter tomorrow if he is not able to pee on his own that they will cut their losses and put the cat down.
I’m torn and have been thinking about it for the past few hours. I could offer to pay for the $1500 surgery to remove the kidney stones but am not sure if it is worth it. Over my childhood we went through 10+ cats; most were outdoor cats that eventually went missing. Due to this I’m somewhat desensitized to losing pets.
I feel bad for putting a price on our cats life and know if it was the family dog in the same situation I would pay in a heartbeat. I just don’t have the same attachment to this cat.
I live nearby but only see my parents a couple times a week. I’m in my 20’s and kind of remember when they got this cat but couldn’t tell you without asking if he is 4 years old or 8 years old.
I’m just trying to organize my thoughts for tomorrow and see if anyone else has been in the same situation. The only reason I have 1500 to spare is because I am very frugal and outside of rent might not spend that much over a few months. It feels different putting a price on a pet though.
