Tl;Dr accidentally stole the love of my roommate's cat. How do I encourage her to love him more and me less again?
So I have a tendency to be instantly loved by animals, and sometimes it results in the animal responding to me more than their owner, which is a large part of why I'm writing this.
My roommate and his cat moved into my house a few months ago and in that time, the cat's favorite person has visibly shifted to be me and I want to change that since it clearly upsets my roommate.
At the beginning, I didn't interact with the cat a lot and honestly would try to do things to keep her from completely attaching herself to me (like gently push her towards the edge of a chair, make loud noises, pick her up, groom her, etc. Basically just things our roommate told us she hates). Somehow all of it made her love me more and now she will wait outside my door and meow at me (sometimes for hours) whenever she thinks I'm awake, she will follow me around like a shadow, and she will jump into my lap as soon as I sit down to beg for attention from me. If I don't pay attention to her, she'll just rub on or play with things that smell like me for 10 minutes and then come beg for attention again.
I really haven't done a lot for the cat besides pet her and brush her in passing. Most of the time she's been here, ive been the primary person to scold her when she misbehaves. I don't feed her, give her water, or give her treats.
As I alluded to earlier, this is far from the first time an animal has chosen to respond more to me than their owner. But normally I don't have to play the long term game with the animal since I'm usually just visiting their house instead of living with them.
Any advice on how to help redirect the cat's love back to her owner and away from me again?
