TLDR; my cat is lost. I'm devastated.

I'm absolutely devastated right now. We have a very old cat (nearly 20 y/o) who is lost. Today was busy and hectic and so somehow I didn't realize until around midnight that I hadn't seen my cat in awhile. At least since yesterday. Naturally, I begin searching the house, the yard, the garage. He's nowhere.
My husband is devastated also but trying to hide it (this is his cat he's had since he was a kitten. He was a stray farm cat that followed him home.)
I've put up alerts on social media. I've alerted neighbors. He is a very, very old cat.
We have a doggy door for our boxer and the cat would go out (but not wander far...backyard is fenced and our cat is too old to jump.) Hense the fear my husband has that something (fox, owl, etc) got him...
Another fear is he snuck off and passed away (he's very old but has had no indication of poor health and had always been healthy and active.) But again, I looked. He's nowhere to be found.
Only other thing we can think of is he possibly snuck out of our gate when our lawn service came by.
I'm horrified we will never find out what happened to him. The thought of him alone...dying or possibly being eaten in his last few years devastates me.
That isn't how he should have gone out. I'm so sick to my stomach.
I know people say not to give up hope. But I just have a bad feeling. He is so old and his senses aren't that great. 😪
Sorry for the long post. How do I cope? My mind won't stop picturing him. In worst case scenario..alone..hungry..lonely..lost...dead.
I need help. I need advise.
I'm so devastated and lost.
I know I'm not the only person to lose a pet but I'm just beside myself. I have a blanket with our scent outside.
