O'Neill is a really happy, fat, mellow cat. He wouldn't say boo to a fly. Even my cat-disliking family thinks he's pretty okay. He gives great shoe-shines and has made countless soft-pawed biscuits on my lap over the past nine years. Everything was great until his last vet appointment on 5/27 where the vet discovered a large mass in his stomach.
I did a follow-up ultrasound after an x-ray revealed nothing helpful. The ultrasound isolated the mass to his liver and the vet explained that it was large enough to be pushing other organs out of place. I asked for blood work to be done on him and it showed nothing remarkable and no indications of stress. The vet explained that the next step was an open exploratory surgery to biopsy the mass, but was clear that this would only give me answers and not necessarily a treatment.
He's so happy and he hates the vet so much. I hate the thought of him having to undergo surgery and recovery from it when he's otherwise happy... and just to satisfy my desire for an answer? But if I don't do it am I just being cheap or not caring about him? It isn't the money, I could get it together, but I don't know what to do.
Has anyone else been in this situation? I just want to hear what others think because the people in my life honestly just want me to put him down now.
TL:DR - My cat is happy. The vet wants surgery, my family wants him euthanized. What do you think?
