TL;DR my 6 year old cat refuses to use the litter box, the vets and I have tried everything (full list below) and they have finally suggested euthanasia because they think it’s psychological and anti-anxieties aren’t working. Anyone else have any other suggestions or similar experiences?
I’ve had my cat Anya since she was 8 weeks old, and she is now almost 6. She has never been an only cat, as I already had another 4 month old kitten when I got Anya and then got another kitten when Anya was about 8 months old. All three of them have always gotten along really well.
For as long as I can remember, Anya has had issues with using the litter box. I’ve separated her from the other cats multiple times to make sure that it’s her, and every time my suspicions have been confirmed. I’ve gone through quite a few life changes, like moving, my partner moving in, and going in between working a lot and being home all the time. However, she’s been doing this since before I moved and before I met my partner and even when I was home all the time. I’ve taken her to the vet probably like 15 times now. They’ve always checked for a UTI and she’s never had one. I’ve tried three different anti-anxieties, a few different litters, I’ve added 6 litter boxes, and even tried different food a few times. She has a big cat tree, lots of toys, someone is home with her all the time to give her attention, and overall she’s VERY happy and loving. But nothing has ever worked. She goes literally everywhere besides the litter box, sometimes even right outside of it.
I’m just tired of having to clean up after her and having to spend so much money on this, but I also feel bad that she’s now confined to the bathroom because she’ll pee right on me when I’m petting her. I love her with my whole heart but I’m just at my wits end. The vet told me my only option at this point might be euthanizing her, but I wanted to see if anyone else has any suggestions or similar experiences?
