Background: We adopted a 5 year old catahoula mix about 5 months ago and she was in the adoption system for about a month before that and no one has history on her prior. For the first few months we had her on food that wasn't agreeing with her but she takes anti anxiety medication so we had it confused with her soft poo.
To help get some training down we used more treats than I care to admit and about a month ago changed her to a much better food and cut back on so many treats when we work on training. She chunked up a little bit, so I trimmed her back to the minimum recommended by the bag for a 50+ pound dog on weight loss, 2 cups a day. Over the last couple weeks she has started scrounging for food HARD. She was licking a kitchen cabinet door the other day that had the smallest drip of something from cooking.
She still gets the occasionally small share of our food but she isn't begging for it.We're active at the dog park a couple times a week and walk about 2 miles a day. Is there a long transition period or have I essentially been underfeeding her lately? I feel bad because she's transitioned to downing her food almost immediately and spending the rest of the morning before her crate time just sniffing for anything she can find.
