New cat has weird behavior

I adopted a very sweet cat the other day, she acclimated super well to her new home, and is very friendly with myself and my roommates. But whenever she’s laying or sitting with me and hears someone moving around in another room she immediately goes on alert, growls, and runs to see what’s going on. She then sees it’s a roommate, and comes back to me. She is friendly to both me and my roommates. She does follow me around the house, and will hang out in whatever room I’m in.

She hasn’t bitten or scratched (aside from play nibbles) at all. The shelter said she’s around 1-1.5 years old, she was at the shelter, adopted by a family with a dog for about a week, and brought back because she and the dog didn’t get along. I adopted her the next day.

Is this typical cat behavior? None of the cats I’ve had before have acted like this.
