Some advice on adopting a dog through a shelter/organisation?

Hi there,

I know most people here are from the US and things are different over there but maybe I can still get some advice.

The partner and I are finally able to adopt a dog. I grew up with dogs and am experienced while he is not. We definitely not want to buy a dog from a breeder but rescue one. We live in the first floor of a 3-family-house, have a 110m² (apparently that's 1184,03 squarefeet) flat and our landlord is okay with a dog. We also have a small private garden plot but it's not and cannot be seperated by a fence from our 2 neighbours plots. Both of us work but I am in home office atm and the man works 5mins by foot from home so he can come over in his breaks and he doesn't have fixed hours.

We want a mid-sized dog (around the size of an aussie shepherd).

So here is the problem: I contacted the nearest 3 shelters in the area (up to 2 hr drive away) and they either said they don't give dogs to people who rent their living space or they don't give dogs to people who don't have a private big garden where the dog can stay outside for a while unsupervised.

Then I went on and applied with 3 rescue organidations who rescue strays and dogs from killing stations in Romania, Bulgaria etc. There I got the answers that 1) they don't give dogs to people with no experience (my experience apparently doesn't count because the family dogs were my parents/grandparents dogs and I was not fully responsible for them). 2) They don't give dogs to people who live for rent (again this reason) or they 3) don't give dogs to people when both partners work fulltime (even after I explained the partner can go home whenever and I am at least part time in home office for the forseeable future because "if we need to change jobs that might not be the case any longer")

So I am a bit at loss here. I know they do this because they want the best possible situation for their dogs but I think we have a pretty good home to give to a dog. Now I am about to check private offers but I am afraid of supporting a puppy mill accidentally or sth. That's why I wanted to adopt through an "official" place like a shelter or an organisation.

Any tips?
