Hey everyone. I just adopted a new kitty who is about a year old. He is such a great boy - sleeps in my bed, cuddles on my tummy in the morning, eats well, uses his litter box with no issues.
About a week and a half after bringing him home, I woke up this weekend to one of his eyes being all red, squinty, and watery. I took him to the vet and they prescribed antibiotic eye drops for that eye (FYI giving a cat eye drops is super fun and not difficult at all. /s). After a couple days of eye drops, his eye looks slightly better. But this morning his other eye is all watery (but not really red or squinty), I took him back to the same office (different vet working today though). They are having me do the same drops just in both eyes now.
I was hoping someone else here has had conjunctivitis in a pet before and can reassure me that their fur baby recovered beautifully without lasting issues. I keep having worst case scenario panic about him going blind or getting an ulcer in one or both eyes. I think it’s because I haven’t had him home super long. The vet said it’s probably something he had when he came home from the shelter since it’s typically only picked up from other cats (and he’s the only pet in my home and stays indoors 100%). It kills me seeing his eyes red and teary, makes me feel like he is crying!!
I grew up in a house with 2 dogs and 2 cats. One of our dogs ended up with a tear duct issue where she constantly had “weepy eyes” but no infection or issues - we just wiped her eyes daily to keep them clean. I am so hoping he is perfectly healthy. The more I read about cat conjunctivitis the more afraid I get that maybe he has a herpes virus or FIV (which he tested negative for at the shelter). Meanwhile the little dude is acting totally normal and just wants me to stop subjecting him to the vet visits. Thanks for any insight you may be able to provide!!
