Removing benign tumor/lipoma?

My boyfriend and I are currently watching his parents older (14 yr) maltese poodle. She is the first dog they have had "grow old" as a family, so I think they are a little too quick to jump to the worst conclusion. Earlier this fall she had a small lump on her leg and the vet removed it without biopsy and it turned out to be completely benign. Well she has another lump we noticed a few days ago. So, every dog I have ever known has gotten lumps as they got older. Its my understanding they are pretty harmless masses that are just under the skin and as long as your dog doesnt seem bothered they are fine. The vet that they normally take her to is part of a pet store chain and I have heard some pretty bad things from people about this location. They were unhappy with how the last lump was handled but they still take her there periodically.

My question is: I assume this lump is harmless, so is it crazy of me to take her to the vet I take my own pets to and get a second opinion? Or is it normal to have these benign masses removed?
