Good Lordy Loo! What an afternoon! Strap in all, I have a story.
So for a spot of background: I have been somewhat miserable the last few days and depression is kicking my backside again. I spent an evening complaining to my ever-patient boyfriend last night (bless his heart.) He quite firmly suggests for me to take the puppo for a walk. Begrudgingly, I agree.
This afternoon I finally get off my arse and I drag my younger sibling along with me, while Jojen (the family dog, a King Charles Cavalier) drags me behind him.
The weather was cloudy and I had heard thunder earlier, I hoped to get the walk in before getting too wet. We get a little rained on but none of us mind as it's not heavy, and we walk around a little while and I played on my phone catching Pokemon. Sibling and I are discussing heading back soon as it might rain again. We come to an intersection and we are about to turn right when we spot something white.
It's moving.
At first we thought it was a cat, but I look closer and see a very small white dog running about in the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD and a car slowing as it nears the dog. I am on alert at once because I wanna get the pup to safety but don't really want him to run off if I decide to chase him or potentially get run over myself.
I look around to see if anyone is chasing the dog or seems to know him when the little white fluffball spots us. I kneel down and he trots right over. He seems happy to see us and is a bit muddy. I check his collar and his name is Charlie. He seems to be a white Maltese, if a bit grubby, and shakes as he stands next to me, flicking me with mud! I look to the tag again; there is a number under his name and I quickly call it.
No response. Crap.
At this point I have no other option than to take him home. I can't and will NOT leave him there and I can't see anyone around. I pick him up and he just pants as sibling and I walk home. Charlie is so friendly and leans on me, or watches the scenery as we go. He is panting and despite the cloudy weather it's a warm and muggy day. Jojen is on the leash and happy to have a new friend coming with us. I quickly send a text while holding him to the number on his tag to let the owner know I have picked up Charlie and to please call me.
I can't believe I just found a dog in the middle of the street! I send a photo of the adorable muddy baby to my boyfriend. His response:
'Whose dog have you run off with?'
(Just so you know I have never stolen a dog, he just knows how much I love them and I have made jokes before)
Me: I found him in the road! Taking him home cos the owner didn't pick up.
Bf: you stole him
Me: found him. Don't have a spare leash so I am taking him home to have a drink.
Bf: soooo stealing and keeping
What a delightful man that I love.
Anyway. We make our way home and I give both boys water and many pats. I also tried to wash the mud of Charlie's little face. I tried the number again but again, no answer. I figured the owner was at work.
I didn't mind! Charlie is so cute and I am happy to hang out with him for a while. I offered them treats but only Jojen took his. I also notice Charlie hiding under the bench and behind our legs whenever he gets a chance. So I brought them inside and just let them relax, and made sure Charlie had lots of ear scritches. Anywhere Charlie went Jojen was right behind him. He showed our new guest his toys and where the treats live, as well as his towel where Charlie tried to dry his face.
After a short while, my phone rings! I answer and hear a frantic, crying woman asking about Charlie. I quickly assure her that he is fine and safe. I explained what happened, then gave her my address for her mother to come round as she was still at work.
When the doorbell rang Charlie ran to the door immediately and was so happy to see a familiar face! I talked with the woman a while and she was just lovely, explaining poor Charlie is afraid of thunder and digs when he is afraid, then escaped under the fence. She also told me he was a rescue dog and had been abused in his previous home. I was devastated to hear this. He is a sweet boy, who could do that to a gorgeous friendly dog??
She took him away and back to the others (she owns two and the daughter has Charlie plus another dog) and I close the door. I thought that was the end of it.
A few hours later, I get a text from the owner, again thanking me for taking care of Charlie as he is her baby and she was so worried about him. She says she wants to drop by and offer me a thank you for taking him in. I tell her it's not necessary as meeting Charlie was awesome enough, but she insists.
A while later a pretty blonde woman arrives and she is holding flowers! She hands them to me and thanks me again. I nearly cry! We invite her in and chat briefly and I explain the incident in detail. She has an adorable bubbly laugh and I am just happy she is smiling.
At the end of our conversation, she offers to meet up at a dog park so Jojen can see his new friend again. Jojen just wags his little tail and smiles. I think he is looking forward to that!
Come to think of it, so am I!
