What are the best options for pet insurance?

I am looking for pet insurance for my 9 month old Australian shepherd. Last year he required three random doctors visits. One for an eye infection, one for kennel cough (he was vaccinated and still contracted it), and one for a dog attack that occurred (dog attacked and bit his paw at local pet store). The kennel cough visit alone cost around $250. All in all we probably spent around $600 on just random visits, not including his scheduled ones. I have put the cost on my credit card each time since I wasn't prepared to drop money on the vet on those occasions, but I need something more assuring and pet insurance seems to be the way to go. Does anybody have suggestion on providers to use, or ones to specifically avoid? I use USAA fro car insurance, but when I called about pet insurance they said they go through a third party provider, so I may as well shop around. He is registered through the AKC, is their insurance advisable compared to others?
