I have 4 adult dogs (ages 4, 5, 8, and 14). Up until last year, we lived in a house with a huge yard where they had plenty of outdoor time and ample opportunity to use the bathroom. Just under a year ago, we moved into a smaller home with a very small yard where the dogs don’t like to be outside. The majority of their bathroom activities take place on walks OR (here’s the problem) in the house.
In our old house, we had the occasional accident but now we are cleaning up multiple pee puddles a day and I feel like I’m losing my mind. The dogs usually go for a walk in the morning, get let out in the yard at lunch, and either do yard time or walks in the evening, but we still find ourselves with at least two indoor accidents per day.
We suspect the 14 year old dog is becoming unable to control her bladder and wondering if this could be causing the other dogs to think going inside is ok, too?
Should we try puppy pads? Will that encourage bad behavior? I feel like I’m at my wits end. I’ve tried sticking to a schedule, we’ve tried the enzyme sprays, etc. Does anyone have advice? I can’t take it anymore.
(A little more info: the 8 and 14 year old are not kenneled, while the younger 2 are. However, accidents seems to be primarily the 14, 8, and 4 year old dogs.)
