Cat Pees on Stuff, Husband Wants to Get Rid of Her.

My apologies, this is long.

My husband and I have two female cats that he "inherited" when his previous partner left the country about 10 years ago. One is about 12, the other is about 14.

During the 8 years or so that we've been together the 12 year old cat has periodically peed on stuff. She peed on my leather jacket and destroyed it. She even peed on the skirt of my wedding dress (it was stored in a dress storage bag but was exposed because the zipper broke.)

Sometimes we can't come up with a reason for her accidents and sometimes it seems to be connected to changes in our household. On one occasion she peed on some stuff after we moved some items from our office to the basement. She peed on some clothing after our son was born about a year ago.

My husband has been renovating our basement and in the last week she has peed on a shirt and sweatshirt he left in his basement office. She also peed on the floor by her litter box (also in the basement but nowhere near the office.) It was not blocked, but there was a ladder next to it so maybe she felt too nervous to use it. She has also peed on some insulation near her litterbox.

We have taken her to the vet a couple of times for this issue. During the first visit (maybe 5 years ago) the vet detected urinary crystals and recommended a urinary SO food. She has been on this food since then.

We took her to the vet again two years ago for a checkup and she was healthy other than being a bit overweight. I think this is a behavioral issue rather than a physical issue but I can't be sure since I'm not a vet. I'm not sure if it matter, but she has been spayed.

I try to give her lots of attention and occasionally buy the cats items like a cat tree and cat grass. About a year ago we got a second litter box in the hopes that it would help calm her and prevent her from peeing outside her litter box. One is on the main floor and the other is in the basement. That seemed to help until the renovations started about 4 months ago.

To be fair to my husband, she csn be very whiny and seems to expect a lot of attention. I think she is just a high strung, high maintenance cat.

Now that she has had 3 accidents in the last week my husband is furious and wants to get rid of her. He refuses to spend money on a vet visit since we have taken her to the vet for this issue several times. I wouldn't feel right rehoming her unless we knew we found someone who can deal with any accidents and won't give her away or euthanize her. If we took her to a shelter she would be euthanized. My husband says her presence is stressing him out so much that it is affecting his blood pressure.

Has anyone experienced this problem? I really want to do the right thing by her and I am finding this conflict to be very stressful. Thank you in advance.

Tldr; the cat has peed on three items on the last week and my husband wants to get rid of her.
