From cat colony for six years to my house = ultimate chill cat?

My wife and I adopted our cat back in November. Prior to living with us, he lived in a cat colony. While he is hefty (he's 17 pounds and the vet told us its a healthy weight for him), he's so docile that I have the feeling that he got quite ruffed up. And he has plenty of scars that indicate this might be the case. Furthermore, his adoption sheet mentioned a lot of fight wounds (that have since then healed). He's also quite timid around us when not in one of his numerous safe zones (or typically when he's not lounging).

This got me wondering, is it possible that he's had such a rough six years (before we adopted him) that now having unlimited free rest time and access to delicious and high-quality food (controlled portions of course) has gotten him so lazy to the point that he sleeps 24/7?

I've never even seen him climb anywhere, other than couch/bed. I can leave some of the treats (freeze-dried shrimp) on the coffee table and he will never jump on it to fetch them.

This cat is so confusing to me, he's unlike any other cats I've ever adopted or seen
