I want to get a dog for my child but I work away alot and my wife works 3 days a week. Doesnt seem fair to the dog. How do redditors deal with pets and a busy family?

I love dogs but know it takes alot of time to have a dog that is smart and obedient. When I was young my father had a home based business in the country so every day he was home for the dogs and they were so ridiculously smart and were barely ever home alone. This is ideal but understand not everyone can do that including my self. Any thoughts on this?
