So I’ve been back in my parents’ house since March because of the pandemic and every day I spend quality time with my dogs. Up until now it’s been normal, when I go downstairs to the kitchen they get up from their beds and jump onto my lap or the seat next to me. Lately though, my chihuahua has been reluctant to get near me. My maltese has been normal as ever so this post is mainly about my chihuahua.
Anyway the weird behavior is that when i’m not around, they lounge on their beds or floor or mind their own business. typical doggy behavior. when i go downstairs they both still get up from their beds to greet me, and when I sit on the couch or whatever, which is usually their signal to join me, the maltese will sit with me but my chi will not. It used to be that she’d beg for me to pick her up and put her on my lap and she’d nap there for a looooong time, but now if I pick her up she immediately jumps off, and so I’ve stopped picking her up ofc bc she doesn’t like it, and now she just follows my aunt around the kitchen (she lives with us and I always go downstairs around the time my aunt is there).
Right now I am in the room adjacent to the kitchen and out of sight of my dogs and I can see that my chihuahua has gone back to normal, she’s no longer clinging to my aunt or anything. She only does that when I’m there. What’s going on??? For context my aunt and I have a great relationship, there’s nothing bad between us at all. I also am the most tender and most attentive to the care of my dogs so idk what this is about. The only thing I can think of is recently I clipped my chihuahua’s nails so she might be annoyed by that but I’ve done it tons of times before so idk what changed?? Is my dog sensing something in me that i don’t know about that’s toxic or negative or something??
I don’t know what to do or think. I love my dogs so much, i’d imagine it’s what a mom feels like when their kid grows all distant. it hurts lol please help :(
