Hello! This is my first post in this subreddit. I have just joined as I am now the owner of a 2 month old domestic shorthair tabby kitten.
I have been wanting a companion for a while now, and was originally set on getting a dog, but after researching into some costs and considering where I live, I decided to get a cat instead. I have had cats in the past (two outdoor cats), but this is the first one I am truly responsible for. I was super excited to adopt, and fell in love with the one I picked, even though I originally wanted a black kitten. His temperament is great, he uses his litter box and eats super well. However, he is extremely needy. My roommate, who has a 6 month old kitten (so she has gone through this process recently), says this is normal for his age and he will get more independent with age. I believe her, but her kitten is just starting to settle down at 6 months, and having another 4 months to go before my kitten reaches that point has caused my anxiety to spike a little. All of the changes happened really fast and my routine got messed with a little (I manage moderately severe anxiety through use of strict routines and other coping mechanisms). I think the whole thing threw me for a loop. Don’t get me wrong, I’m super glad I was able to give my kitten a home, but it’s been stressed me out as well. Is this normal? Also, I have a dog back home and felt terrible about the idea of him thinking I replaced him. I know he’s not as concerned with it as my brain tells me he is, but that’s anxiety for you. I love my kitten and can’t wait to see him grow up, but right now everything seems so out of whack.
In short, does this get better? Does anyone have any tips to help?
