I recently adopted a male kitten from a local shelter at 11 weeks old on 9/9. He was housed in an area with around 11 other kittens (I know...), several of whom looked physically ill and wouldn't let you near them. He was quirky, following us around, wanting attention, and being super playful. We decided we wanted him and took him home with us. He had one vaccine the first FVRCP vaccine. They told us he needed a booster and to be neutered around 4 months old.
The first day/night was perfectly fine; he was a little scared but ate & drank and played a little, used the Litterbox fine as well. The next morning 9/10 was horrible he started having pure liquid diarrhea, which we attributed to stress/food issues (but we kept him on the same food as the shelter) and he only ate once all day (canned food) and was super lethargic wouldn't really play or have any energy. This continued into the next day, same eating pattern with liquid diarrhea and lethargic/not playing, he ended up vomiting yellow bile. At this point because he wasn't eating/drinking well & vomiting & diarrhea we decided to take him to emergency vet since it was late. They said he had a fever of 103F and gave him fluids and antibiotic and a anti inflammatory injection and sent him home & said it doesn't get better bring him back in 48 hours.
He started to improve after that, he started eating his canned food more & stared drinking better, he wasn't really vomiting. His stool was still pure liquid but he was more alert, slept less than 99% of the day and had more energy when he was awake and even played a bit. This was great! He had a regular vet appointment on Monday 9/14, where they determined he had a viral infection likely from the shelter and he still had a fever. They gave him a tapeworm injection in case he had those. I wasn't happy with this vet because they didn't attempt to figure out what was going on, but I did give them a stool sample to which they said that the feline panleukopenia was negative. They also recommended I switch him to a meat diet for his upset stomach (chicken, tuna).
After we got home from the vet, he vomited white foam. I then started him on chicken, which he loved. Over time, his stool was still pretty liquid but starting getting some chunks in it, which was an improvement. He started acting like he felt better as well. Come Friday he started acting like he didn't feel well again, pretty lethargic, not wanting to play, not eating super well. He also vomited white foam again morning of 9/19, So I took him to another vet on Saturday 9/19.
At the other vet they said he was underweight for his age at 2.2 lbs. They did a parasite screening and found coccidia. They started him on Albon for 7 days, along with flea/ear treatment and a dewormer in case he had any left over worms. After starting Albon, he seemed to be doing a little better his stools were still soft but formed (no liquid; I was so happy)! We got him off the meat diet and switched to hard food/meat mixed in and then hard food w/ tuna juice on top. Well come Monday 9/21, he was super lethargic again, not wanting to play, had diarrhea again pretty liquid and just was acting like he wasn't feeling good. I checked his gums which were pale. So I took him in again and they took blood and found out he had elevated WBC, low eosinophils, high monocytes, high globulin, high neutrophils. They ended up treating him with fluids and an anti nausea injection.
So I took him home, and he doesn't seem to be bouncing back this time. He still sleeps all the time, I know cats sleep a lot, but he is never really doing much else besides looking for a place to lay down. He doesn't play really ever, and it's hard to initiate a play session with him, he's interested and follows it with his eyes but never acts on it really. He did a few days out of the last 2 weeks. Today, 9/23 he vomited 5 times, 3 of which were food related and 2 were white foam. He is back to having pure liquid diarrhea although he does drink fine; but he stopped eating dry food again and now Is only eating tuna. He does still want attention and cries a lot. And he also had diarrhea in behind my bed today, which he has NEVER done before he always uses the Litterbox.
I guess my thought process is going crazy right now. I just don't understand why the vet keeps talking in circles when I visit them, they think it is one thing and then want to run more tests to see if it is something else and can't really give a definitive diagnosis. I am obviously concerned about FIP to which he does have some symptoms/blood work alignment but I know it could also be 100 other things as well. I'm obviously concerned about him and his well being and want what is best for him. I am beyond exhausted as he has a lot of extensive needs, and the financial situation is starting to become a burden. We have invested over $700 in just the last week on stuff and there seems to be little to no improvement, even getting worse!
I am beyond myself; I do not want anything to happen to him and I would feel so guilty if I couldn't provide for his extensive medical needs and something that could have been prevented had he gotten the proper care happen to him. I just want him to get better, and right now I just don't know he has a lot of issues and I don't know that we are gonna find a solution anytime soon and the financial resources are being quickly depleted. I would hate to take him back to the shelter and that is a decision that would never ever come lightly, but I am stressing myself out, I am stressing my partner out and for the sake of his health and our sanity and financial stability we may have to.
Just looking for some support, advice, something.
