Do dogs get “sick?” Does anyone have any advice for my dog who suddenly is acting like something’s really wrong?

Hi, I’m sorry for posting this here, but I was hoping for some advice from anyone who might know something.

I have an 11 year old chihuahua. He is obviously old, but overall, he’s in great health. He goes for mile long walks every morning and LOVES it. He is full of energy and runs all over the backyard/goes up and down our stairs with ease every day. That being said, he is still old so of course he’s not in perfect shape. For example, we have to lift him onto and off of the bed now because he won’t jump that high anymore, and of course he naps a lot.

This morning, everything seemed normal with him. He had his early morning walk with our other dog, and was acting super excited, as usual. Around 11:30am, I was sitting on my bed with him and my other dog. I stood up to get something and my other dog (age 5) jumped off the bed and ran out of the room. As I approached the door, my chihuahua suddenly was making kind of a breathy yelping noise. I thought maybe he wanted to get down too, so I picked him up gently to put him on the ground and as soon as I held him, he started yelping super loudly and frantically in my ear like he was in pain. I quickly set him back down onto the bed. Then he started shaking. Obviously he’s a chihuahua and they do shake to an extent, but he was shaking heavily, much more than normal.

We let him lay in the bed for a while and separated him from our other dog who is overly playful and a lot bigger, because I didn’t want to upset my chihuahua more. I tried to pick him up super carefully and he started yelping frantically again. I put pressure on his legs/paws/back/sides/neck/head/tail/etc. to try and find out if he had hurt himself, but got no reaction from him when I did this.

Finally, he let us pick him up super gently and we transported him into another room where he could lay on his favorite floor blanket. He continued to shiver and was completely out of character. I brought him a treat and he didn’t even touch it. About an hour later, he actually did get up and got himself downstairs to his dog bed where he spends a lot of his time. We had guests over for dinner and they brought their little dog who my dog typically always plays with and he didn’t even get out of his dog bed. We were able to carry him outside to use the bathroom twice, and he did go to the bathroom. However, other than that, he continues to shiver and yelp randomly and won’t get up, sit up, or even walk around. I checked up on him periodically and he just looked at me. I pet him for a while and he liked that (I think). Normally, he is super cuddly and wants to be in my lap or jumps at my legs and begs to be picked up, and he didn’t want to sit in my lap or be picked up at all. He won’t even give kisses. (Basically he’s SUPER out of character.)

Now it’s about 10:30pm. I carried his entire dog bed while he was laying in it up to my bed and he’s currently laying down with me in his dog bed (that’s now on my bed). He continues to randomly cry a little or even do a soft yelp every now and again. He won’t get up to eat or drink, but I brought him some soft dog food to his bed and he did eat it. He refused to drink when I offer him a little bowl of water.

Has anyone had an experience with something like this, or even had a similar situation happen to you? I know he is old, but everything happened so suddenly. One minute he was totally normal and the next minute, he’s yelping and crying and won’t get up, walk around, or eat on his own. This behavior has been continuous for almost 12 hours now.

We are going to try to get him into the vet ASAP (hopefully tomorrow) but for now I feel so helpless because I don’t know what’s wrong with him or how to help. Can dogs get sick like humans get sick? A dog cold? Or does it sound like he’s hurting?

Sorry for the super long post, but thank you to anyone who took the time to read through this. He is my baby, I’m 23 now but I’ve had him since he was a puppy 💕
