Hi, I am going to adopt a cat from the local shelter soon and am in desperate need of advice! I am 19 and have only owned dogs my entire life. I had one cat when I was super young but it was feral and never truly adapted and was a miserable experience. Now, I moved away from home and my mom decided to keep my dog but I want to be fair to him and not get another one. Therefore, I've decided to get a cat. I am a huge animal lover and am in desperate need of companionship from an animal. My dog was a life-saver and absorbed a lot of the discourse going on in my life. While I know cats aren't usually as affectionate as dogs, they're much better than fish, etc. and I believe it is the perfect time to have one. I really want to try out a new animal as a good portion of my family is allergic to cats and would never own one. I am not and have loved nearly every single cat I've come across and want to have one on my own.
That being said, I am devoted to truly taking care of this animal and am not making a hasty decision. I am fully equipped to care for a cat and if/when the time comes to start resuming life similar to a pre-COVID era, I will make sure to do everything in my power to ensure my cat is still cared for, doesn't become depressed, and so forth. I am an excellent pet owner and a cat that depends on me will never become a low priority. On another note, I am not going to surrender my cat back to a shelter under most any circumstance. I am eager to have a fuzzy friend and one that will be with me for many, many years to come.
Anyway, since I have never owned a cat, I need as much advice as I can get! I have consulted many internet articles and whatnot, but feel like they only give the most obvious advice, like make sure you give your cat water or have toys, etc. I was wondering if any of you have more specific advice relating to like every day life? Or, what I should expect when bringing a kitten home for the first time? Do you recommend getting an older cat in the shelter (though still young) or a kitten? Are there any warning signs I should look for when picking one out? Any specific toys that are a sure fire way to entertain your cat? Any advice on house training it with a litter box? Any other advice relating to literally anything about picking out/owning a cat?
Anything you suggest will be greatly appreciated! Please remember I am absolutely clueless when it comes to cats and want to be as prepared as possible when I get one! I want to ensure a smooth transition and make sure my kitty is over then moon in its new life!
