I'm a year into a brand new city working my dream job. I don't know much anyone here, and my family is on the other side of the country. Ever since I came here I've had some unexpected feelings of depression and loneliness. I live in a studio. Pre-covid I had good coworkers that I would talk and hang out with, but now I'm just home all day with nothing but work. I plan to live here for a long time, so I think I need some level of companionship to keep me sane. Other ways to keep me sane are living with roommates or finding a girlfriend, but I'm taking a break from dating, and I'm not sure if roommates are worth it.
My family suggested I should get a pet, and I'm thinking of a cat because of their independence. What do you guys think? I have had some experience with pets before, but I'm just worried if I am making the right decision.
