Keep a single kitten to keep the mother company - good or bad idea?

My wife and I have a two year old female Russian Blue for which we've always wished we purchased a brother/sister when we originally bought her from the breeder.

Despite us living in a large house she does seem a bit bored and restless; she paces around and longs to be outside. She's spoilt with toys and has also recently been spoilt with attention whilst we've worked from home. She's not allowed outside unsupervised but does get to regularly go into the garden under our supervision. We've also leash trained her and before autumn kicked in we were taking her for daily walks, which she seemed to enjoy.

We fostered a kitten a few months back in order to give her a playmate, but things didn't go too well and the new kitten was too much for her.

Since then, she escaped for a few days and has since had a litter of two kittens. They're now eight weeks old and she seems quite close to one of them, whilst the other seems to be more of a loner and perfectly happy in his own company.

As our Russian Blue seems to at least tolerate them at the minute, we're wondering if we should keep the one she seems close to in order to address the playmate dilemma. We have a large enough place for the two of them and could comfortably support two cats financially.

Our considerations at the minute are if we split the kittens up then the mother may be left with the handful of the remaining one - at least the kittens are keeping each other company at present. And as the one we'd like to keep grows older, our elder cat may become disinterested in her.

Does anyone have any advice on whether this would be a good idea?
