This might be a little long but bear with me (TL;DR at the end).
I have 7yo poodle, he's always been an inside dog, i don't like the idea of keeping dogs in a leash or outside, even if i had a big dog he would stay inside. I love my little Mateo more than anything, he always has food and water, we cut his hair, take him to the vet, etc. i don't like to let him go outside but i allow him his freedom, if he wants to go outside i just let him, if he's not back in 15 to 30 min i go looking for him. It's been like that his whole life, he pretty much knows the whole neighborhood which is quite small. there's been sometimes when it's been like 2 hours and he hasn't come back yet, i get pretty desperate looking for him everywhere but he always comes back, But since like a few days ago when my dad lets him out at like 8AM when he goes to work Mateo doesn't come back until like 7PM, almost 12 hours outside, i obviously got extremely worried the first time it happened and went looking for him everywhere but i couldn't find him until he came back on his own. The next day the same happened, looked for him everywhere, not a sign, then he came back on his own at like 8PM. I was thinking on not letting him go outside but he would cry the whole day on the door and he wouldn't eat or drink any water. I decided to follow him to see where he went and discovered that a neighbor was letting him inside their house to play with their dogs, they would feed him and give him water. I had a conversation with my neighbor, told them that i was relived that my dog was at least safe and actually really close but that i didn't want him to get used to staying in their house, they understood and told me that they wouldn't let him inside anymore. The problem is that my Mateo is now crying the whole day begging me to let him go to the neighbor's house and i just have to let him go outside, i can't keep him locked inside forever. I don't know what do, the neighbors seem like really good people and my Mateo is really happy playing with their dogs but i'm afraid that eventually he won't want to come back home, but i just can't stand seeing him cry all day.
TL;DR A neighbor has been letting my dog inside their house to play with their dogs, giving him water and food. Now my dog wants to be in their house the whole day and just cry in my house to let him go to the neighbor's. I'm afraid he'll want to stay with them but i can't stand seeing him cry all day.
