(Sorry for Grammer/punctuation I'm on mobile, sleep deprived, vet tech and volunteer these days)
My friend adopted a shelter dog. I gave him some basic training advice and nutrition guidance I'm not a trainer but I am a vet tech. I did work in a shelter with high risk dogs for 2 years while I was in school. (Also pitbulls and the like, never a day without one in the shelter)
I've recently gone over to his house after not seeing eachother or much of the puppy for a few months.
His dogs training isn't going well. He took alittle of my advice but didn't stick to clicker training or positive rewards while taking the dog out to potty, or redirecting bad habits.
He literally said why should I reward my puppy for peeing outside? They should only be punished for peeing inside the house.
Now the dog is becoming food/toy aggressive, peeing and pooping in its crate (not a good sign) and won't go potty outside. I was astonished, my friend is a really nice/smart guy. I asked him what was going on with the dog? Why has he started using a crate when he's working from home? It was a normal playful just neutered dog a couple of months ago, maybe he would have chewed on something but he was old enough to be done with the crazy puppy shredding phase.
He started watching some "pack leader" YouTube dog trainer that basically just beats/screams at dogs and calls it training. The worst part was, the guy was training sled dogs that lived outside... not exactly the same as your apartment bound lab pit mix, and other dog sledding people don't even agree with this guy.
I told him to find another local trainer, and DO NOT look at anymore fear based training. I'm trying to explain to him that "alpha wolf" is just mom and dad and he should be parenting his dog, and not only giving negative/harsh feedback. I tried to show him, but his dog is very nervous to take food or treats from me. I'm disappointed and disgusted with my friends behavior and training, he's borderline abusing this dog with his "training," and somehow made a shelter dog worse off then when he left.
I'm scared for his dog, he is a lab pit mix, and the issues he's creating for this dog are basically a death sentence because of local breed laws and people's bias.
Has anyone else dealt with this? I kinda know how to train the dog but I'm working all the time. How do I train my friend to be a better owner, trainer, and pet parent?
Or do I ditch the friendship and get the dog back into a good shelter that will get him the training/foster parents he needs so he can live a good life?
