firstly please pardon me if this is too uh, involved or if this would be better suited to a different sub.
i have a three year old cat, who is pretty well socialized. my roommate, who took over from my previous roommate in june, has a 2-ish year pitt mix. at first i thought this would be fine, my cat is used to being around other animals and i didn't want her to be lonely. the arrangement turned out to be bad for several reasons, and i'm moving in a couple weeks.
this dog came from a neglectful background and is a "rescue", but its owner is completely unwilling to give it the time, attention and enrichment he needs to overcome its issues. it's not trained, which they lied about. it is crated for what would be 10+ hours a day, if i did not let it out when i come home from work. it gets 2 10 minute walks a day, and the rest of the time it's confined to the rm's room. they don't even play. when it misbehaves, it is stuck, if anything is done at all.
i don't know what triggered it, but it has been regressing fast over the past couple weeks. last night this came to a head when it attacked my cat unprovoked, who had nudged a door open (to what used to be "her "bedroom). she spent the day in the hospital, shes bruised and has a puncture wound from a bite but she will be ok.
roommate is not apologetic in the least. they wanted to talk to a lawyer, rather than help. they're free to do so, obviously, but it would require a report to be made which means if the dog ever bites anyone again, it will be euthanized. (i don't know what to say. logic isn't their strong suit.)
this dog deserves better. it's not its fault that it lashed out at my cat, it is a result of its circumstances. i have half a mind to call animal control, but i don't want the dog to be possibly euthanized as a result due to its breed and pre-existing issues. does anybody have any advice/experience with reporting animals in a vulnerable situation? i've confronted my rm on multiple occasions, offered suggestions and assistance, i've given time to take care of and train this animal that isn't mine. none of it has had any real effect.
tl;dr my sh*tty rm has a dog they won't take care of and now it's attacked a smaller animal. i want to know if there is a way i can get this dog the help it needs before it's too late.
