Stealing/adopting an outdoor cat?

Hi everyone,

My uncle’s family just “adopted” a “stray cat” from his neighborhood. I don’t know what the exact story is but this is what he told me.

This kitty has been coming and going around his house for a while. One day, kitty came inside his house and apparently “never wanted to leave”. But he also mentioned the kitty keeps pawing at the door. And the reason why they don’t want to let him out is because there are lots of coyotes around and they don’t want him dead. They walked around the neighbors for a couple days and saw no “lost cat” signs. It also seems like they weren’t trying hard enough to knock on people’s door and ask about the cat. So my uncle fell in love with him, took him to get scanned for a microchip and it’s negative. And kitty got neutered as well.

Well the thing is, this kitty has a collar when he was first found. He is not dirty, looks very well fed and very friendly. Obviously was someone’s pet or someone has been taking care of him. I feel mixed emotions about this. I honestly think that he’s stealing someone’s pet. I don’t know what to do.. I told him to post flyers on Nextdoor and Craigslist or around the neighborhood and it seems like he’s unwilling to do it..
