Animal law

Pet ownership law

I am being sued by my cousins on behalf of my father to return my cat I have had for four years. Back story- I live in California and My cousin was given a cat from his father about 12 yrs ago when they both lived on my grandmothers property. He moved out and abandoned the cat with my grandmother. She became the caregiver and mom of the cat. She passed away two years after, I then moved in to the house and took care of the cat. Meanwhile, my father is living on the same property (not the same house) during this whole time. He had no responsibility towards the cat ever. No care towards him, nothing. I was harassed by my father (he is a meth addict) he threw a rock through my window and stole a door. I then moved out with my husband and bought our own house. I took my cat with me. Again, by this point my grandmother has been dead four years. No one in the family has any contact or care to the cat for a total of approximately 6 years, 4 of which I am the mom. Since I moved out the family has been harassing me for the cat saying I stole him. I have a vet bill, photos, an old roommates testament, and the testament for three other people who had to come take care of the cat on the rare occasion I was able to leave town. The only thing they have is the receipt that they bought the cat 12 years ago. I can’t see how this would stand up in court. I have messages from the original owner stating the cat would not remember him at this point any way. My court date is April 5, 2021. I honestly did not think it would even get this far. In the demand letter it states she’s working on behalf of my father but in the papers filed shes claiming the cat as hers. Should I be worried?
