Can you trust a dog?

Is there such thing as "trust" between humans and dogs? Or do most people just not put themselves and their dogs in a situation that could call into question the idea that their dog is "trustworthy"?

TLDR: My wife and I have a 7 year old golden doodle that bit my mother 3 years ago.

He got into a bag of stickers at her house (my mother's an elementary school teacher), one got stuck to his snout fur, she tried to peel it off, and he snapped at her, biting the tip of her finger ("of", not "off"). The result was a very small puncture, but she was shaken, understandably.

Everyone in my life now considers him to be a dog you just. can't. trust.

My wife and I find this baffling, not because we think he is trustworthy, but because our thought is that you can't "trust" any dog. We both feel that all dogs are animals and need to be treated and respected as such. It seems as though everyone else in my life thinks dogs are toys, and if you have one that bites - regardless of circumstance - it's defective.

My dog now only gets to see me, my wife, and my dad; everyone else in my life insists he be locked away before entering our house. But these same people have no problem letting their toddler children or grandchildren play unsupervised with dogs that have never bitten anyone, but who have also never been asked to pass the snout/sticker test.

I'm just really curious as to whether or not most people think the concept of "trust" as it applies to a relationship between two humans is transferable to the relationship between a dog and a human.
