Cat I’m watching won’t go to the bathroom :/, help!

So I’m a pet sitter, and I’m currently watching a 3 year old cat.

It’s his first time with a sitter, and at first I thought he was just shy which is normal. But he hides 24/7 and most concerningly, he has been here for over 24 hours and not gone to the bathroom at all. He’s also hardly eaten.

I was honest with the owners about this but they seem absolutely clueless about cat behavior. They insisted that I just shove treats in his face and impose my presence on him and that will somehow magically fix it.

My experience with cats, and everything I’ve read, has told me the best thing to do is to give them their space when they are afraid.

The owners also seem totally unaware of their own cat’s limits in doing this.

Like he has hardly been socialized because they adopted him shortly before the pandemicj and yet they act shocked that he’s not acclimating easily to this abruptly new situation.

At this point I’m very frustrated with their ignorance, and worried for him. It’s not good for cats to hold it for multiple days, but I don’t know what to do to fix it.

If anyone has advice for how if an help him relax/ go potty please let me know :(
