How do you train and qualify your dog to be a therapy dog?

I have a ten month old British Mastiff. From the very beginning when he was 8 weeks old I noticed that he was an exceptionally calm and affectionate dog. He is wonderful with people and very content to love on anyone. He is very gentle even at such a young age. He is also enormous which seems to interest people once they realize how sweet he is. And he really is the sweetest dog you could ever hope to meet.

I really feel like he would be wonderful as a therapy dog. He would be perfect for visiting the elderly in nursing homes or children in hospitals. Obviously right now with Covid everything is very locked down but in the future I think it would be nice to share my pup with others because I know he would enjoy it and could bring a lot of comfort to people.

I was wondering how one would qualify their dog for such work and if there are programs or special training he would need? I think it would be good for me to take him to an obedience course because then he would have a certificate, but I am sure there must be more to it. He is the most easily trainable dog as he is a people pleaser and very intelligent.

Tl/dr: I have a one in a million sweetheart of a dog and would like to know how best to share him with others as a therapy dog.
