I’m babysitting my neighbors pets and while I was opening the garage door to check a weird sound, their cat darted out. I noticed the door to outside was open and was being held in place so I couldn’t close it quickly. I ran over to the cat and tried to grab it but it wriggled out of my arms and all I could grab was its tail. It freaked out understandably and let out horrible sounds as I tried to wrangle it into my arms again and bring it inside. Once I got it down and closed the door it looked terrified of me and was letting out really quiet sad meows as it tried to claw at the door to get back in. I felt so bad I was shaking and crying- i’ve never hurt an animal like that.
I met this cat about a month ago when they first got it and it was/is pretty young (it’s about 8 months old now). I was the first to pet and bond with it because as soon as my neighbors got it they locked it in a room and went on a trip.
I’m the first person the cat bonded to and I was the first person to hurt it like that. I feel awful.
After the incident I stayed in the room with it until it would let me touch it again and then we both went back inside. About 20 minutes afterwards it was rubbing against me and licking me again. The cat didn’t look hurt at all and the tail was moving normally, when I touched it’s tail it didn’t recoil or anything so I don’t think their tail is injured.
Has anyone ever done this before? Will the cat remember me as an abuser? I don’t see this cat too often so I can’t regularly assure it that i’ll never hurt it again. I can’t forget how scared it looked after I did that.
