I have a cat who is a year old, and is absolutely loving mother to her four female kittens. They snuggle together, clean each other and mommy cat even gets jealous if they play without her. The kittens are two months old and the mum is slowly weaning them off, spends time alone early morning but doesn't show any aggression at all. The weirdest thing happened twice when the tabby that impregnated her came around to visit. He's an outdoors cat and mum was outdoors for four months till she moved in with us and now she only goes out to explore for maybe an hour everyday. On both the occasions we were monitoring them playing in the garden and the tabby snuck in when we looked away for a minute. The tabby didn't display any aggression but the mom cat started hissing and attacking her baby. It happened again today with another kitten, the kitten was also hissing back and we had to drag the mother away. On the first occasion the mum went back to normal almost immediately after the tabby left and while the kittens seemed scared for a bit, started playing with mom again. When it happened again today we separated the mom and kept her away for a few hours. We've been trying to do that anyway to stop her lactation because she needs to get spayed soon and the kittens are eating home and kitten food. Does anyone have any idea why this happens? We want to leave the kittens to enjoy themselves in the open more but are terrified the tabby will come back and this will happen again.
